私は今、あるオンラインミーティングを終えたところです。そこは３人の
ニューカマーAAに来たばかりの新しい仲間
- この1ヶ月の間、何日かの違いでソーバーの日数を数え続けている新しい仲間 - がいるグループで、私たちは彼らを「三銃士」と呼び始めました。彼らは生真面目で、正直で、感謝の気持ちでいっぱいです ... そして私たちが彼らに伝えてきたメッセージは、基本的には「解決はある」ということでした。
もちろん、解決策はすべて基本的なことばかりです：最初の一杯に手を出すな。ミーティングに行きなさい。AAの他のアルコホーリクとつながりなさい。シンプルにやりなさい。何度でも戻って来なさい。本当にその通りです。
ステップや伝統の話もあれば、ロングソーバーの仲間が、AAの歴史や、ステップをどのように行う必要があるかについての難解な意見に首を突っ込むこともあります。しかし、全体的なメッセージはシンプルなものです：

という病気には解決策があるということです。
今夜のミーティングには、入院して7日目の女性がいて、泣きながら今どんなに怖いかを話していました。彼女はそれ以外何も言えませんでした。それでも彼女は、もしかするとメッセージが運ばれてきて、8日目には退院できるかもしれないと、ミーティングの間中、ずっとその場に張り付いていました。
多くのミーティングが、ご存知の通り人々がどうやってソーバーを得られたかについて書かれている「第５章 どうやればうまくいくのか (How it Works)」を読みますが、その章の少し後には、もちろんこれらは単なる提案にしか過ぎず、私たちはほんの少しの知識しか持っていないと書かれています。それ (

) がどうして効くのかは、私にとって永遠の謎です。それはまるで水の分子の成り立ち ...水素が2つで酸素が1つ ... そして第3の物質があるけれどもそれが何かはわからない ... という話に似ています。

I just got off an online meeting where there’s a group of newcomers— three of them who have been counting days for over a month now with a few days separating them— that we’ve started to call the Three Musketeers. They are raw and honest and brimming with gratitude….and the message that we’ve been giving them is basically: there is a solution.
The solution of course is all the basics: don’t (pick up the first) drink, go to meetings, connect with other alcoholics in AA, keep it simple, keep coming back. It works. It really does.
There’s talk of the steps and traditions and sometimes folks with long time sober will get into the weeds of some arcane AA history or opinions about exactly how a certain step needs to be worked. But the overall message is simple: there is a solution from the malady of alcoholism.
Tonight there was a woman with seven days who was crying and saying how terrified she was and she couldn’t say anything more. But she stuck around for the whole meeting and, maybe, if the message was received, she’ll come back tomorrow with eight days.
Lots of meetings read “How it Works” as if we really know how people get sober, but of course a little later in the book it says these are just suggestions, we know but a little. How it really works is to me a mystery. It’s a bit like that definition of water as two parts hydrogen, one part oxygen…and also a third thing, but we don’t know what it is.
