Hi, everyone. George, a drunk. Thank you, Mark, for chairing. Bill Wilson and Bob Smith: Could there be more common names? I doubt it. Both men, however, turned out to be highly complex individuals. In my early sobriety, I read much by and about them. I even went so far as to visit their homes, Dr. Bob's on Ardmore Street in Akron, Ohio; and Bill's "Stepping Stones" in Katonah, New York. Their dwelling places told me much about the pair.
Of the two, I became an ardent admirer of the Midwest doctor, who told Bill to "Keep it simple." His home, looking like many others on Ardmore Street, was dedicated to dealing with AA newcomers in an upstairs bedroom where Dr. Bob insisted the individual perform both fourth and fifth steps on his very first day as an AA member. Unlike Bill, he didn't give his home a name. It was simply a place to live and work with newcomers. As with me, Dr. Bob liked fast cars. He owned a Buick, often drove fast, and he loved it dearly.
On the day I visited Dr. Bob's simple home, I attended a meeting with Group No. 1 that night in a church basement. Unlike most meetings at that time, it was a non-smoking meeting, mainly because the woman who knew both AA founders and still attended that meeting, had a lung problem. The group's leader for that night showed me a Bible, signed by Dr. Bob and Bill, plus other early members. Memories of that day and night yet abide as if they happened yesterday. And that's the way it works for me.
