One has to establish what is met by the word evolution, and the implied process used for said change
I concur with a previous share that suggests that Traditions and not to forget the Concepts for world service to help facilitate any change or evolution of our service structures.
While the method of sharing the message have been adapted to embrace new technologies or abilities to gather together This is the equivalent of suggestions that had we gone from candles or oil lanterns to electrical light was an AA evolution I would reject that premise.
While AA’s method of carrying the message has indeed changed with the times… This does not suggest an evolution of the core of what AA is in any respect.
The Big Book, our basic text has remained static… in its message and approach…of “recovery begins when one alcoholic talks with another, sharing experience strength and hope.
The internet spawned copious parallel so called studies and guides that sometimes come from critics and detractors of AA’s programme.
For an example, there were the so called 4th step questions, which were at best a watered down version of the instructions in the Big Book.
Which has morphed into non AA Big Book studies that alter the AA message into a less coherent look alike?
So any evolution from the basic text is in fact a non AA change.
Even the use of the AA literature… is not being used in the proper light.
Ever notice how many meetings use the 12 & 12 to study the steps? But no one ever reads the Preface. I have been on record, using step 7 in the 12X12 as an example. Offered $100 for every word that gives instructions on how to do step 7. That information is to be found in the Big Book as pointed out in the forward to the 12 and 12.
Both books complement one another, but the Big Book is the primer and the recipe book for applying the steps... The 12 X 12 serves to expand the understanding of why the steps work… and opens up discussion on the role of the Traditions
The service manual with the 12 Concepts is guides to trusted servants to apply the traditions in the service structure of Groups districts Areas etc.
So the evolution of AA is in the organizational structure, and methods of delivering the unchanged message using tools that have become available.
AA is not old enough but had it started in centuries gone by, our basic text might have been hand written as was the bible prior to the printing press.
The best big book study is one alkie working with another… in combination with Meetings that study the Big Book as it is written, with the aid of experience. And a good Dictionary Pre 1960’s preferably the Oxford…
Why that date, because the word brainstorm, for example, that appears in the BB. When written had only one meaning... Namely a violent rage... not sitting down to hash out ideas which came out of the 60’s just like the term groovy! There are others the most noticeable is the word gay... which had no sexual component when used to describe the crowd in the bar.
