カリフォルニア州 La Jolla にある私の最初の Mt. Soledad Men’s で、私は AA とシップについて、知っていることをすべて学びました。そのミーティングは書籍に従って運営されていました。そのグループはシップに重点を置いており、その資格のある男性の仲間が何人も私に手を差し伸べてくれました。

ラリーは沢山の仲間のたちのをしていましたが、私が電話するといつも電話に出てくれました。彼は彼にとっての真実を分かち合うことで、私に真実を伝えることを教えてくれました。私は彼の恐れや、彼の育児放棄の問題、彼の人生の問題について学びました。彼の正直さは、私が罪悪感や羞恥心を乗り越え、自分の真実を語る気にさせてくれました。

第3ステップのとき、私たちは彼のオフィスでひざまずき、手をつないで第3ステップの祈りを繰り返しました。男性と手をつなぐのは少し変な感じがしましたが、この30年間、幸運にも私が一緒にワークをすることができたすべての男性の仲間に、私はこのやり方を採用しました。私は「神は、私の中にもあなたの中にもおられないが、私たちが出会う場所におられる」という表現が好きです。私は、私たち全員が必要としている3つのものについて、から学びました：愛、規律、そして方向性です。ラリーはその3つを全て提供してくれました。

Hi Everyone, Jeff, alcoholic,

I learned everything I know about AA and sponsorship in my first home group, Mt. Soledad Men’s in La Jolla, CA. The meeting was run by the book. The group emphasized sponsorship and an number of qualified men put out their hand to me.

It took a few months before I could get up the courage to ask for help, but I finally chose Larry J, the one with the new Mercedes.

Larry sponsored many men but always picked up the phone when I called. He taught me to tell the truth by sharing his truth. I learned about his fear, his abandonment issues, and the problems of his life. His honesty motivated me to walk through my guilt and shame and tell my truth.

When it was time for the third step we got down on our knees in his office, held hands and repeated the Third Step prayer. I admit to feeling a little weird holding hands with a man, but I adopted this practice with all the men I was fortunate enough to work with during the last almost 30 years. I like the expression “God is not in me or in you but in the place where we meet.” I learned we all need three things from our sponsors: love, discipline and direction. Larry supplied all three.
