Hi, everyone. My name is Dave and I am an alcoholic. Thanks for a wonderful topic, Dorothy, for your service to the group, and for your prayers and friendship over the years. Welcome to all and congrats to AA (and HP!) for any milestones we celebrate this week. The program WORKS!!
There are so many passages in the Big Book that have touched me over the years — I LOVE that one from Herbert Spencer in the appendix! — but one that that still echoes is the last few paragraphs of the heart of our text, the summary and conclusion of A Vision for You, page 164.
I had read it, of course, as I was guided through (or thrust into!) the BB by my early sponsors, but sometime in my first or second year, at a meeting of my first home group aboard the USS Ranger, a sponsee named Scottie, asked me to read that passage to close out one of our meetings. I started with “Our book is meant to be suggestive only . . .” I was sobbing uncontrollably before I reached the end of that paragraph. I was overwhelmed by gratitude for being a part of this great Fellowship, keenly aware that I was unworthy of this gift. It took me many minutes to choke out the rest of these 163 words.
As I reread them now, my eyes moistened with deep gratitude and a renewed sense of purpose to fulfill the promise of the Great Fact for us.

Quote: Still you may say: "But I will not have the benefit of contact with you who write this book." We cannot be sure. God will determine that, so you must remember that your real reliance is always upon Him. He will show you how to create the fellowship you crave.
Our book is meant to be suggestive only. We realize we know only a little. God will constantly disclose more to you and to us. Ask Him in your morning meditation what you can do each day for the man who is still sick. The answers will come, if your own house is in order. But obviously you cannot transmit something you haven't got. See to it that your relationship with Him is right, and great events will come to pass for you and countless others. This is the Great Fact for us.
Abandon yourself to God as you understand God. Admit your faults to Him and to your fellows. Clear away the wreckage of your past. Give freely of what you find and join us. We shall be with you in the Fellowship of the Spirit, and you will surely meet some of us as you trudge the Road of Happy Destiny.
