私は55歳以上のアクティブ・アダルト・コミュニティに住んでいます。平均年齢は 79歳くらいで、72歳の私は「子供・ひよっこ」です。 89歳の隣人に恵まれ、彼女はそこそこ健康です。 彼女は毎日犬を3回散歩させ、用事はすべて自分でこなし、銀行のこともコンピューターでこなし、ヒューストン・アストロズとテキサンズ、その他いろいろが大好きです。しかし、私の仕事は毎晩、彼女が元気かどうかを確認することなのです。身体の痛みや悩み事、そして年齢のせいで、彼女は落ち込みがちです。 私の仕事は、彼女の話を聞きサポートをすることです。それは36年前、いや26年前の私にはできなかったことです。1999年に母の死期が近づいた時に、その忍耐力が与えられました。そしてそれは、聖フランシスコの祈りを毎日読むことによって保たれています。彼女は私がいて幸せだと思っていますが、あのね、私の方こそラッキーなのですよ。

I live in an over-55, active adult community. The average age is about 79. At 72, I'm a "kid". I am blessed with an 89-year-old neighbor of reasonably decent health. She takes her dog for three short walks daily, runs all her own errands, does her banking via computer, loves the Houston Astros and Texans, and lots of other things. However, my job is to check up on her every evening to make sure she is okay. She tends to get depressed because of her aches, pains, and age. My job is to listen to her and provide support. That is something I could not do 36 years ago, or even 26 years ago. That patience was delivered to me when my mother was dying in 1999. It is maintained by daily reading of the St Francis Prayer. She thinks she is lucky to have me. You know what, I think I'm the lucky one.
