I am Carl, and I am an alcoholic. Thanks Jeff ...I don't share often, but this topic hit home for me.
Alfred was my father-in-law...Alfred had a long term drinking problem. In the later years of my drinking I often accused my wife of being overly sensitive about alcohol because of Alfred. As a result of a family intervention Alfred entered a treatment center and it worked and his life changed. Some years later we traveled to Minn. for the holidays. On New Year Eve, Alfred invited me to attend a New Years Eve Alcathon in downtown Minneapolis. That night I saw an Alfred that I had never seen before. He was happy and joyous and open, as were the multitude of others at the event. What ever preconceived ideas I may have had about AA were dashed that night.
Fast forward some years and my wife said she could no longer tolerate living with an alcoholic and she and the kids were leaving. She was tired of my drinking, my lies, my broken promises...she was tired of me. At some point I asked if there were any options, and she finally said...Go do what Alfred did. I remembered the New Years Eve I had spent with Alfred. Two weeks later I was in treatment.
