数週間のソーバーだったとき、外来患者治療センターのセラピーサークルに参加していた。脅迫観念は取り除かれ、ピンクの雲にのって漂っていた。
分かち合いで、私の番が来て、私は言った。”気分はとてもいいです。二度とアルコールは飲まないだろう”センターを運営している背の低い丸っこい女性で、ニューヨークから来た元ヘロインジャンキーは、言い返した。”それは、ただの男のエゴで戯言よ、ジェフ！私たちは、ここではそんなくだらないことは言わない。あなたは、今ソーバーでいるためにできるすべてのことをするだけでいいんです。そして、それを十分に祈るほうがいいのよ。これは、私にとって素晴らしいレッスンだった。
ありがたいことに、私は飲みたいとわ思わないし、飲まないとも思っていない。それは決して出てこない。私たちの本に書いてあるように。”私たちは、アルコールに関する限り、中立の立場でいるような気がする。私たちはアルコールと戦うことを止めているんだ。また、誘惑を避けているわけでもない。これは私の経験だ。
また、アルコールを飲むかは、わからないけれど、治療センターの運営者のあの女性が言ったように、私が成長するために必要なことについて、
ハイヤーパワー（HP=ハイヤーパワー）神、または高次の力、自分を超えた大きな力。意志と生き方をゆだねる対象。
より、よく知っていると思うのは傲慢だ。たぶん、もう一つのより深い底付きが、自意識の最後の数層を手放すために必要なのだ。私は望まないが、たぶんそうだろう。

Hi Everyone, Jeff, alcoholic
I was a couple of weeks sober and sitting in the therapy circle in the out- patient treatment center. The obsession had been removed and I was floating on a pink cloud.
When my turn came to share I said, "I feel so good, I'll never drink again!" The short, round woman who ran the center, an ex-heroine junky from New York, snapped back, "That's just ego bull shit Jeff! We don't say crap like that in here. You'd better just do everything you can to stay sober today and pray it's enough. This was a great lesson for me.
Gratefully, I don't want to drink and I don't want not to drink. It doesn't ever come up. Like our book says, “We feel as though we had been placed in position of neutrality as far as alcohol is concerned, We are not fighting it, neither are we avoiding temptation. This is my experience.
I have no idea if I'll ever take another drink, but like the woman who ran the treatment center said, it's arrogant to think I know better than my HP about what I need to grow. Maybe another deeper bottom is necessary to surrender the last few layers of self-will. I hope not, but maybe.
