を始めた最初の頃の、マサチューセッツ州サウスブリッジで毎日行われていた昼間のミーティングを思い出させてくれます。ランダムにシートが配られ、また個々のステップのための12枚のカードも配られていました。シートを持った人が "How It Works" を読み上げると、それにちなんだステップを、ミーティング会場の他のメンバーが読み上げるので、私はあらゆる角度からその声を聞くことができました。それは私にとって素晴らしい思い出です。また、紫とゴールドのフェルトでできた小さなスローガン・バナー（横断幕）の吊り下げと撤収を手伝ったのも楽しかったです。"Easy Does It" が私のお気に入りでした。"THINK THINK THINK" はあまり好きじゃありませんでした。当時は頭が痛かったんですよね。バナーと少し絡めて言うと、玉虫色のAAのバンパーステッカーを車に貼っている仲間もいました。
たまには遠くの町のミーティングに出かけて、新しい人々と知り合うこともありました。GPSやグーグルマップがなかった時代、 紙の地図をどうやって折ったか覚えている？時には、ミーティングが行われる場所の住所が正しいかどうか、わからないこともありました。会場に入る前に 駐車場をうろうろして、バンパー・ステッカーを1、2枚見つけたら、会場の場所が正しいと安心して、見知らぬ ノン・AAの人たちがいる部屋に入ってAAミーティングの場所を尋ね、好奇の目で見られるという恥ずかしさを避けることができました。またそのステッカーを道端で偶然見かけると、良い気分になりました。私は自分の自転車に目立たないように、１枚貼っています。

Hi ESH people I'm an alcoholic and I'm Chuck. Thanks Carl for serving the group this week. I've been to a few meetings here and there and I've relished the widely varied ways in which different groups deliver the same message. If people are getting and staying sober, then the technique is effective.
This discussion takes me back to my very earliest days in sobriety to a daily noontime meeting in Southbridge MA. Sheets are randomly passed out for the readings, and also 12 cards for the individual steps. When How it Works was read by the person with the sheet, the steps are read off the cards by other members around the room and I hear them from all angles. That is a wonderful memory for me. Also, I enjoyed helping hang up and take down the small purple and gold felt slogan banners. Easy Does It was my favorite, THINK THINK THINK not so much. Made my brain hurt back then. Somewhat related to the banners were the iridescent bumper stickers AAs would sometimes stick on their cars.
Once in a while I would go to a meeting in a distant town just to go exploring and meet new people. In the days before GPS and Google maps, remember how we folded paper maps? Sometimes it was a crapshoot if I got the right address where the meeting was to be. Before going in, I would cruise the parking lot, and if I spotted a bumper sticker or two, I would be reassured that I was at the correct location and avoid the embarrassment of going into a room with strange non-AA people and asking where the AA meeting was and getting curious looks. They also put me in a better mood if I happened to see one on the road. I put one discreetly on my bicycle.
