I stole the title off of a member at a meeting some years ago and have floated it more than once. Like you, perhaps, I did a double take and scratched my head in bewilderment...but then it made sense.
Many Meetings ask a member to read "The 12 Promises" which implies that Within AA There are only 12 promises period! This is accidental and is more the side effect of an alcoholic mind like mine, then any claim by AA. My alkie brain is always looking for shortcuts and ways to complete the AA programme. Like the popular 3 step maintenance programme which is fake news... This is a 12 step programme and the actions in the 12 step programme continue for a lifetime. e.g personally I am on my 37'th year of my first 4'th step with numerous pauses to do the action steps associated with inventory There are many more promises than just 12.. The book and the personal experiences of millions of sober members confirm this in spades. Two places there are lists of SOME of the promises,experienced when I complete the actions suggested to acquire them. The first set of 9 promises can be found on page 75 which are at the completion of Step 5.
The one that stood out to me especially as a new member is #7 which says "The feeling that the drink problem has disappeared will often come strongly." That was the insurmountable hurdle before I found AA The next one we keep hidden from newbies On pages 83 and 84 we read 12 of 13 promises but it is the last one that the new member is not sure will occur and coupled with the 9 promises on page 75 we find promise 22 " We will seldom be interested in liquor. If tempted, we recoil from it as from a hot flame" I picked these 2 promises because they addressed my original problem and the AA programme will not work if I continue to drink. Have experienced more gifts as I grow But They are too numerous to share here
