Hi, everyone. My name is Dave and I am an alcoholic. Today marks the 37th anniversary of that moment when I set down my last empty glass of beer on the bar at the Sheraton Waikiki. Booze had quit working - I drank $700 worth of booze ($1,942 in today’s dollar) in five days and couldn’t get drunk. Booze had been the source of so much fun and excitement before the consequences began to pile up. But then it quit working and only left the consequences! That was a moment of desolation and desperation that I hope never to experience again.
The thing is, in just 13 years, booze quit working. I’ve now been sober 37 years, and the program — and the God of my understanding — work better than ever . . . as long as I continue to do my part each day. And to think I was reluctant to trade booze for this way of life . . .
ESH and you all have been a big part of my journey going back 25 years, or so. You have been with me in Iraq (twice), Pakistan, the Pentagon, at sea on the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean and Baltic seas, Afghanistan, and quite a few friendlier places, too. And I have had the privilege to meet some of you in person . . . as we have trudged this Road of Happy Destiny.
