今夜のミーティングで、仲間が最初の三つのステップの新しいバージョンを分かち合った。ステップ1:アルコールは私を殺していた。そして狂わせた。ステップ2:私を助けることができるのは、自分よりあるいはアルコールより偉大な力だった。ステップ3:私は生きるか死ぬかの決心をしなければならなかった。助けを受け入れるかどうかのための。
もちろん、この最初の三つのステップは単純化し過ぎている。一つは、

には単数形の"I”ではなく複数形の"we"で書かれている。しかし、回復の初めの頃の自分も人生に当てはめると、このステップにはいくつかの真実もある。その頃、自殺していたか、最悪でも自己破壊していた。私には助けが必要で、ミーティングに行くことにより、聞くことに心を開くことだった。私は人生に対して決心をした。
ほどなく私の態度と展望が変わった。ミーティングに行くことによって、解決があるように感じた。笑い声を聞きいていたが、戦いと苦しみの話も聞いていた。また、ある意味で罪の贖いの話は、すべての人生観が変わるほどのものだった。
一度酔いがさめると、過去の残骸の片付けを始めた。そこから成長できた。また私の人生の他の分野で、必要な助けを得ることができた。そしてその分野から、さらに多くのことを受け取った（今も続いている）。
なるほど、と思った瞬間はありましたか？はい、実際にたくさんあった。あの最初のミーティングの初めからあった。
最近のミーティングの分かち合いのトピックの中で、いくつかあるトピックの一つは、"解決はある：それは何ですか？” もちろん、

My name is Mark and I’m an alcoholic who is amazed that I don’t have to drink… or think about a drink… today.
Thanks for the topic, Carl.
At a meeting tonight someone shared a fresh version of the first three steps: 1) Alcohol was killing me and making me crazy; 2) I realized there was a power bigger than me or alcohol that could help me; and 3) I had to make a decision to live or die, to accept the help or not.
Of course this oversimplifies the first three steps. For one thing they are written as the plural “we” not singular “I”. But there’s also some truth to this when I applied it to my own life in the early days of recovery. I was killing myself or at a minimum self sabotaging. I needed help and by going to a meeting and being open to what I heard, I made a decision toward life.
Almost immediately my attitude and outlook changed. Going to meetings, feeling like there was a solution, hearing the laughter but also listening to the tales of struggle and suffering and in a sense redemption were all transformative.
Once I sobered up I started to clean up the wreckage of the past and then could grow up, get the help I needed in other areas of my life. And from there more was (and continues to be) revealed.
Was there an Ah-ha moment? Yes, many actually, beginning at that first meeting.
At a recent topic share meeting, one of the themes was “There is a solution: what is it?” Of course there’s an entire chapter in the Big Book about it where it describes the downward spiral of active alcoholism and how it can be stopped and addressed by using the kit of spiritual tools made available to us. The spiritual awakening, psychic change, personality transformation that AA says is needed for recovery has, for this alcoholic, lead to ongoing changes in my attitude and outlooks, and it started when I asked for and was willing to ask for help.
