Hi everyone, my name is Pam and I am an alcoholic. Wishing everyone peace today and all days. My first moment of clarity was when I was preparing a group session topic for my job as a substance abuse counselor in a men’s prison. I was perusing a Big Book (I was not nor had I ever been in recovery at that time) and came across this sentence on page 44:
“If, when you honestly want to, you find you cannot quit entirely, or if when drinking, you have little control over the amount you take, you are probably alcoholic.”
Well, if that doesn’t summarize things neatly. I started attending meetings within a few days of this, telling no one. (After all, I might not be an alcoholic.) That sentence has probably provided my biggest moments of clarity. It took me a month or more at daily meetings to hear the “you are probably alcoholic” part of the sentence.
