with other staff members in an inmate riot.
Riot leaders were planning to murder me because I was "The Man," due to my
position. I was blindfolded, handcuffed, and my ankles bore chained steel
cuffs, as well. Using strong wire, rioters bound me to both oxygen and
acetylene tanks and turned them on, preparing to light them as one rioter
bellowed, "You're going to go sky high, just like Mighty Mouse, you MF'r."
Thankfully, there was no explosion. I remained earthbound.
One year and two days later, I joined AA. Four months later, after talking
to my sponsor, I put in for a demotion back to my English teaching position.
Although I lost quite a bit of annual salary money, the moment I sat behind
my teacher's desk in my classroom, I felt not only that I was where I wanted
to be , but where I was meant to be. And that's the way it works for me.
