Hi, everyone. My name is Dave and I am an alcoholic. Thanks for the great topic, Jan. Welcome to all and Congrats to AA (and HP!) for any milestones we celebrate this week — like Jan’s five years! The program works!
I always loved this line from the Big Book on page 133. It points me at what is possible if I keep at this program. When I was getting sober aboard the USS Ranger, the motto of one of the fighter squadrons was “If you’re not having fun, you’re doing it wrong!” I took that to heart. Today, when I am frightened or burdened by things at work or the hostility that seems to have eclipsed public discourse, it’s because I’m worried about things that are not mine to control. My area of responsibility is strictly limited to my behavior and my attitude. Period. And my primary purpose is to fit myself to be of maximum service to God and the people about me. When I stay in those lanes, I’m pretty close to that ideal of happy, joyous, and free. When I’m not, I’m doing it wrong.
