「どうして名字がないの？」と私は尋ねました。
「僕たちは無名だからさ」とビルは言いました。

I asked my mother who the strangers were.
Go ask them, said the matriarch. So, I did. They introduced themselves as Bill K. and Dick B.
Why don't you have last names? I asked.
Because we're anonymous, said Bill.
I know what that means, I said.
You do. Do you?
Yeah, it means you're like Jap or German spies. They laughed. "Well, then, why are you anonymous?"
So we don't get big heads, said Bill. "That's why."
I didn't understand his answer back then. I do now. And that's the way it works for me.
