Greetings all:
My name is Mark and I’m an alcoholic. Today I’m celebrating 4000 days without having picked up a drink of alcohol or any other mind-numbing drug . It's great to be back, after a few decades of important field research where I examined the potential for this alcoholic to indulge in "controlled" drinking, in the fold of the fellowship of the spirit of AA.
It’s “a few” hours — fewer than many of you, maybe more than others…. But as we are often reminded at meetings, especially when there’s newcomers who are baffled by the idea of putting even a few days together, all we really have is today.
Still, in my experience, the 24 hours do add up to a sort of progress so long as I do my level best to practice the principles of love, tolerance of others, honesty, open-mindedness and, not to forget, not picking up that first drink which remains only an arm’s length away.
Great topic, Carl: gems in AA literature that resonate. To be “rigorously” honest, not all of it does. Some of it makes me cringe, especially parts of the BB. So as I was advised early on (though I don't hear it much these days), I take what is helpful and leave the rest.
There is much I do like: the title of Bill's book of Grapevine essays, The Language of the Heart, is a terrific phrase, though I confess I've only read or heard bits of the book.
And I especially like on the last page of the first 164 pages the comment that the book is meant to be suggestive only. "We realize we know only a little." The bold, audacious claim that doing the steps will automatically lead to a spiritual awakening is somewhat tempered by this statement of humility. And of course a decade after the first AA meeting 88 years ago, the traditions were presented as an additional set of guidelines and guardrails to keep the fellowship alive and well since focusing only on individual recovery wasn't doing the trick.
I also appreciate the importance of individuals being able to find their own conception of a power greater than themselves rather than have a particular conception of God be imposed and required for membership. It's emphasized in the third and 11th steps and as I understand, it was something of a compromise between the freethinkers of AA New York and the Christian evangelicals in Akron.
But maybe the part I resonate with the most in the BB is this:
There is a solution. Almost none of us liked the self-searching, the leveling of our pride, the confession of shortcomings which the process requires for its successful consummation. But we saw that it really worked in others, and we had come to believe in the hopelessness and futility of life as we had been living it. When, therefore, we were approached by those in whom the problem had been solved, there was nothing left for us but to pick up the simple kit of spiritual tools laid at our feet. We have found much of heaven and we have been rocketed into a fourth dimension of existence of which we had not even dreamed.
Who knows what being rocketed to the fourth dimension of existence really means (and it's amazing that it was written before humans had rocketed anywhere), but it does give a somewhat cosmic quality to recovery.
The traditions for me are also real gems. First published in the AA Grapevine in 1946 as “12 Points to Assure Our Future,” they can feel technical and, well, boring. But they are so incredibly important to keeping the “we” of AA united, setting some guardrails so we stay focused on our primary purpose, stay away from controversy (including politics and religion!) and we-- a ragtag group of drunks who are not drinking-- stay disorganized , self-supporting and decentralized.
For this alcoholic, the culmination is the 12th tradition, a real gem that in the 12X12 table of contents is summarized this way:
*Anonymity is the spiritual foundation of all our traditions, ever reminding us to place principles before personalities.*
Spiritual substance of anonymity is sacrifice. Subordinating personal aims to the common good is the essence of all Twelve Traditions. Why A.A. could not remain a secret society. Principles come before personalities. One hundred percent anonymity at the public level. Anonymity is real humility.
And of course there are other gems not in the formal literature, like "keep coming back" and "give time time."
