Good Morning ESH:
Thanks Mark for chairing this week, and for your service to ESH! Congratulations to anyone celebrating a sobriety milestone this week! Welcome to anyone new to ESH!
Topic: What does AA (and the third tradition in particular) mean to you? What is the core of the program of recovery to you?
Dominic recovered alcoholic. When I got here, I wasn’t looking for God nor did I believe God was the answer to my drinking problem. I believed in God back then; yet, without knowing it, I was my Higher Power, and my will ran so riotous, I ended up in AA; where I learned to connect, establish, and grow a relationship with my Higher Power, God.
As I’ve learned repeatedly, what I believe in or don’t believe doesn’t make my belief or disbelief true. Yet, the consequences are living in dysfunctional reality than what could have been. When I finally admitted I was an alcoholic, I was disillusioned to discover that I’d been an alcoholic a long, long time before believing I was a real alcoholic!. It also turned out that God was and is the answer to my drinking and all my other problems, I didn’t believe that in the beginning either. I can lock down on my unbelief, being closed-minded about God, attend AA for years and miss the whole thing! I had to open my mind to God, not just the idea of God, I had to get a sponsor who had a spiritual awakening and say yes to all the direction he provided; this was the flashpoint of the beginning of my recovery. In the first year of my recovery, I began seeking God through the 12 steps and experienced a spiritual awakening. I was rocketed to a new dimension of a truer reality and learned that seeking God is what the Big Book emphasizes.
When I first read Mark’s lead share this week, I rankled a bit before my rankle turned into a chuckle. “Send them to secular AA?” AA is secular! Also, the assertion that folks not seeking to be increasingly God-conscious, or God-seeking are the “free thinkers” is derogatory toward believers and is untrue. Sure, there are members of AA that have reached a point where God is central to their lives and members that reduce God or a higher power to what their imagination draws up that is convenient. Nonetheless, AA is unaffiliated with any religion, or philosophy. Its main purpose is for members to study our basic text that has helped many become recovered from alcoholism. The primary mega-theme of our Big Book and the 12 Steps is to seek God and develop a relationship with Him. Sure, we can begin with our own conception of a Higher Power. Yet, what is often missed in these passages is the context of any conception outside of ourselves is a point where one can begin to commence spiritual growth. Whether I feel I know God and have faith already, or if I begin with the Higher Power stepping stone approach, the point is I am directed in the 12-step instructions to seek and rely on this Power increasingly, as my one-day-at-time turns into weeks, months, years, and decades.
Regarding Tradition 3, indeed everyone is welcome to be an AA Member provided they have an honest desire to stop drinking. Yet, as my friend Steve H., a former ESH Member used to say, “the requirements for AA membership are not the same as the requirements for recovery.” Of course, anyone in AA is welcome to do anything they want. For me, I no longer see AA as a program as much as I see it as a way to live my life. From my perspective the core is about carrying the message of recovery that is outlined in our Big Book, living a 12-step life which has given me and countless others a transformed life which began and continues through sobriety. It is all about God and the spiritual awakening brought about most effectively by working the 12 steps by the instructions of the Big Book with a sponsor who has experienced a spiritual awakening. The core is coming to believe in a Power Greater than ourselves that can solve our problem, should I ever drift away from this fact, my risk factors for taking that first drink and many other vulnerabilities to my wonderful will rise--for then, I have once again become my Higher Power without even noticing it!
For me, I could not stay in AA without the change coming over me and the willingness to continue to connect with and show up for a relationship with my Creator. In our Big Book on the top of page 29, it states about the people in the stories in the back of the book; interestingly the passage does not state these are the stories of people that stopped drinking. It says these are the stories of how these folks established their relationship with God. This re-emphasizes to me that establishing and nurturing a relationship with God is the most effective and smoothest pathway to permanent sobriety. Alcohol was not my problem. I am the problem. Stopping drinking was not the solution, just stopping drinking made me miserable. Becoming and staying spiritually strong with God is the solution. This is why I need God in my life. In fact, for me I needed a Savior! My sobriety is the by-product of my spiritual fitness. My spiritual fitness is a by-product of where I am with my relationship with God. The 12-Steps help me to have God as the highest priority in my life, one-day-at-a-time. All of this with the power of God in my life has produced a fabulous yet not trouble-free life. Yet I am more equipped today than ever to handle all of troubles that come my way today.
If there are members in this meeting that have not experienced a spiritual awakening, there are many in this meeting that can guide you through the Big Book and the 12-steps. This my friends is not something to miss and it is available to everyone no matter how much sober time you have or don’t have.
