だったビル・Kの話をします。ビルは、当時11歳で赤毛、そばかすだらけの子供だった私を、友達、真の仲間として扱ってくれました。
ビル・Kとディック・Bは、1950年代に始まった初期のAAメンバーでした。彼らは昼間、私たちの家に1週間滞在し、そのうちの1人は夜も泊まりました。ディックは自分の時間を過ごしていましたが、ビルはさまざまな話をしてくれ、私は熱心に耳を傾けました。それでもまだビル・Kの物語の全貌は話し尽くされませんでした。

Hi, everyone. George, a drunk. Thank you, Chuck, for chairing. I've often told the story of my father's sponsor, Bill K., who treated me, an eleven-year-old, auburn-haired, freckle-face kid, as a friend, a true buddy.
Bill K. and Dick B. were early AA members since the year was 1950. They remained in our home for a week during the daytime. One remained all night. Dick kept to himself while Bill told all kinds of stories while I intently listened. However, I haven't told Bill K.'s entire story yet.
Our ship was somewhere in the South China Sea. Pilots were busy flying planes somewhere secret with all their identification removed. We ship's company members were not anxious but concerned, naturally, since we hadn't docked in any port for forty-three days.
Other ships tended to us at sea with needed fuel, food, and ordnance. Canned milk still isn't my favorite. Finally, the mail plane arrived. I received a letter from home, in which my mother wrote that Bill K. had ended his life with a shotgun. I didn't cry. I probably should have. I was devastated, however. In a way, I still am. I guess unloading this story will someday help me. And that's the way it works for me.
