正直なところ、私はビルがここで何を言っているのか、まだ理解できていません。「他人のために自己犠牲を払う」苦しんでいるアルコホリック（あるいは他の人間）を助けるために、「痛くなるまで与える」ことのように聞こえます。しかし、私は毎回、他の酔っ払いが酒を断ち切ったり、自分の道を切り開いたり(あるいは、彼の頭の中から抜け出したり) するのを助けるために、自分の身を差し伸べてきました。

Hi, everyone. My name is Dave and I am an alcoholic. Thanks for a great topic, your friendship, and your example of service, Lisa. And Happy Birthday!! Welcome to all and congrats to AA (and HP!) for any milestones we celebrate this week — like Lisa’s 38 years! — the program works!
I have to confess that I do not yet understand what Bill is talking about here. “Self-sacrifice for others” sounds like “giving until it hurts” to help another suffering alcoholic (or other human being if I’m truly “practicing these principles in all my affairs”). But every single time I have extended myself to help another drunk get sober or get out of his own way (or get out of his head, for that matter), I have been richly rewarded with, among other things, sobriety, gratitude, peace of mind, a sense of purpose, and a very satisfying way of life.
Back in early sobriety (and before Keurig and other forms of instant gratification coffee), I made coffee for a couple of meetings. As such, I was in the room early waiting for that coffee urn to deliver the goods for the meeting when a newbie walked in looking for the meeting. Or when an existing member came in with his or her hair on fire, needing to talk to another drunk. I’m grateful that I got to be there when someone needed me to be.
In the course of my time here, I’ve made coffee, set up chairs, got speakers for meetings, served as secretary, treasurer, chair, GSR, greeter, Intergroup rep, shared my story . . . In return, I’ve found a way of life and sense of purpose that is beyond my wildest dreams.
