アルコホリックの Mark です。私の人生や世の中には様々なドラマがあり、時にはトラウマになることもありますが、今日、お酒を飲まなくて済んだのは驚きです。周りにお酒が無いわけではありません。フランスではワインや蒸留酒が当たり前のように飲まれていて、それはある種の宗教のようなもので、さまざまな儀式や伝統があるのです。しかし、あなた方を含む AA の他の人々の犠牲(?)のおかげで、私は酒を飲まなくても生きられる方法を学びました。
素晴らしいトピックですね、リサ。特に伝統について考えさせられました。12&12の中のある段落が、伝統の堅果として大好きです。伝統 12（P.184）には、匿名ではない著者がこう書いています。"アノミニティの霊的な実体は犠牲である。AAの「十二の伝統」は、共通の利益のために個人的な欲望をあきらめるよう繰り返し求めています。私たちは（アノミニティに象徴されるような）犠牲的な精神がすべての基礎となるものであることに気が付きます。AA がこのような犠牲の上に成り立っているからこそ、人々は私たちの未来に高い信頼を寄せているのです。"
最近、私が所属している（匿名の）オンライングループで、グループとAA全般の信頼を打ち砕くようなある大きな問題が発生しました。長くなりますが、あるメンバーが長期間のソーバーと素晴らしい人格で、グループの若い女性たちに自分を理想的な人物として売り込みました。しかし、その過程で、多くの女性たちが、彼の行動は略奪的であると判断し、大きな対立が生じ、気まずい集団良心のプロセスで処理されて、大きな恨みを買い、多くの人が信頼を失ったままになってしまいました。そのため、メンバーには重い腰を上げる時期が続きました。 いくつかのスクリプトにセーフガード・ステートメントを追加するという明確なステップを踏みました。その一方で、自分の行動を断固として否定した個人を追放するなどの措置は、先送りされました。

Greetings: My name is Mark and I”m an alcoholic. With all the drama and sometimes trauma going on in my life and the world in general, it’s amazing that I didn’t have to drink today. It’s not like there isn’t alcohol around— we live in the center of France where wine and other spirits are like a sort of religion with all sorts of rituals and traditions. But thanks to the sacrifice of others in AA, including you all, I’ve learned how to live without needing to drink.
Great topic, Lisa, and it got me thinking especially about the traditions and a paragraph in the 12X12 that as a Traditions Nut I love— on Tradition Twelve (p. 184) the not-so-anonymous author writes: “The spiritual substance of anonymity is sacrifice. Because AA’s Twelve Traditions repeatedly ask us to give up personal desires for the common good, we realize that the sacrificial spirit — well symbolized by anonymity— is the foundation of them all. It is AA’s proved willingness to make these sacrifices that gives people their high confidence in our future.”
Recently an online group I belong to (that will remain anonymous) ran into some big problems that shattered the confidence of the group and of AA in general. Long story short, a member with long term sobriety and a big personality marketed himself to young women in the group as their ideal sponsor because of his experience, but along the way many of the women concluded his behavior was predatory and there was a big confrontation that was handled through an awkward group conscience process that left nobody happy, stirred up major resentments all around and left many with their trust broken. So it’s been a time of heavy soul searching for members of the group. Some clear steps were taken— adding a safeguarding statement in the script— while other steps, like banning the individual, who adamantly denied his behavior, were postponed.
What does this have to do with anonymity and sacrifice? One way it relates is that strong personalities overshadowed our basic principles for a while. Iit is also a reminder that AA in the early days… and many times since then… has wrestled with strong personalities threatening damage to the fellowship, if only by distracting us from the principles. But in the end, as the dust settles, the principles and sacrifice of many behind the scenes to keep us focused on keeping the meetings going and returning to the basics— don’t drink, go to meetings— is winning the day. Some folks have thrown up their hands and said “I’m out of here! This is too much!” … but others keep moving forward, returning especially to the traditions of AA unity, primary purposes and anonymity to keep from being swamped by the drama and trauma of it all.
The concept of sacrifice, especially self-sacrifice, isn’t just in the traditions. It’s also mentioned in the chapter How it Works: “To be vital, faith must be accompanied by self sacrifice and unselfish constructive action. “. Certainly that’s been my experience. When I’m able to be of genuine service to others it is the perfect antidote to my own selfish agenda.
