Hi, everyone. George, a drunk. Thank you, Lisa, for chairing, and
congratulations for your 38 years of sobriety, achieved mostly one day at a
time, but I'd wager there were nanoseconds at a time, as well. As to your
subject, self-sacrifice, I can recall only one such episode in AA.
Early in my sobriety, my sponsor, Greg, assigned me to clean ashtrays
after the meetings. "But I don't smoke," I complained.
"I know," Greg replied. "Cleaning those ashtrays is twelve-step work. You
said you wanted to do twelve-step work, right?"
"Yeah," I said. At first, I saw it as a nasty job, but then I began looking
forward to being "The Ashtray Cleaner."
About nine months later, Greg assigned Tom, his newest student, to the job
of The Ashtray Cleaner. I was more than upset.. "Why" I asked Greg, "did
you assign Tom to do my job? Didn't I do it well enough?"
"Tom needs to do some twelve-step work," Greg replied. "Besides, he doesn't
smoke either." That's when Greg offered me his sly grin. That's the only
incident in all the twenty-four hours of my being an AA member, for which I
self-sacrificed. I agree with you: It ain't much. And that's the way it
works for me.
