英語を学ぶ者として、辞書を使うことはこの言葉 (Sober) の全体的な意味を理解する手段にはなりません…（そして、ここに注意点があります）。それは、AAコミュニティ内で実際に使われている狭義の定義と、一般的な世界観における定義とは異なるということです。
だからといって、私たちにとっての定義が固定されたものだというわけではありません。実際には、まったく逆であり、その意味は恣意的で流動的なのです。
AAには「ソーバー審査委員会」のようなものが存在せず、私たちの誰かが正式な成長レベルに達して「ソーバー」と名乗る資格があるかどうかを判断する仕組みがないことに、お気づきかもしれません。それもそのはず、そんな資格はそもそも存在しないのです。これは驚くことではありません。なぜなら、この世界的な共同体の「CEO」とも言うべき存在は、歩道で酔いつぶれている男や女だからです。実際、数年前にトロントで開催されたAA国際カンファレンスの向かい側の通りにも、そうした人がいました。
それは教育を受けることに似ています… 受けるべきレベルは選択制であり、それは個人の裁量に委ねられています。
非常に成功したビジネスマンの中には、伝統的な意味での教育をまったく受けていない人もおり、その中には読み書きができない人もいました。最近では、非常に高学歴の人々が常識を欠いていることを示す場面も見られます。
中にはAAに来て酒を断ち、それに満足して「自分はソーバーだ」と宣言し、したがってAAのやり方を続ける必要はないと言う人もいます。彼らはソーバーでしょうか？ 彼ら自身の目と見解ではそうです…こういった煩わしいミーティングには関心がないのです。
AAには、みんなから尊敬され、助けを惜しまない、２桁台の年数のソーバーを持つスーパー・メンバーもいます。その人に触発され、助けられ、指導を受けた感謝の気持ちでいっぱいのメンバーたちが集まっています。しかし、彼のバースデーで彼の家族は、私や他の仲間たちを驚かせました。家族はこう言ったのです。「この人がAAの仲間たちに本当に助けられたことに感謝しますが、この人は家に帰って来ませんでした。」私がAAに来たときのオールドタイマーたちを思い出させます。彼らはよく、ソーバーの質を実感できるのは、家族と会ってフィードバックを受けることができたときだけだと言っていました。

における成長を承認するための審査機関はないので、ソーバーとはあなた自身が望むものであっても構いません。

というもう一つの視点が必要です。そして、他の人が成長する手助けをすることも必要です。
その選択は私たちにあります。そして、私自身は神がまだ私を見捨てていないと信じており、霊的成長を促進するために最も効果的なことを可能な限り行い、AAの内外で他の人々の助けになるよう努めています。

As a student of the English language, using a dictionary, is not the vehicle for a comprehensive definition of this word...( and here is the caveat) within the narrow definition in practice within the AA community..as opposed to the world view.
Which is not to say that our definition is a static one.. if fact it is precisely the opposite and is arbitrary and fluid in it's meaning.
You may have noticed the absence of of sobriety panels in AA to determine if any of us have reached the official growth level to warrant using the term. That is because there is none. Not really surprising since this world wide organization’s CEO is the man or woman who is passed out on the sidewalk and in Toronto this was across the street to the AA international conference a few years back.
It is like being educated…. There are optional levels one can take.. and it is in the discretion of the individual.
Very successful busainess men have had zero education in the traditional sense and more then one was illiterate.And of late, very well educated people hace demonstrated that they have no capacity for common sense.
Some people come here and get off the booze.. to their satisfaction and declare themselves sober and thus no need of continued AA indoctrination. Are they sober? IN their eyes and outlook yes… no heed for these annoying meetings.
So we have the super member, double digit sobriety admired by all, helper to all and sundry.. and room is full of grateful members who were inspired helped and mentored by this man… yet at his celebration of life, held within AA.. the family shocked everyone including me, when they said they appreciated the accolades from the people who genuinely were helped by this man, and sated.. This man you speak of never came home. Reminds me of the old-timers when I came in. It was common for them to say they did not have a sense of the quality of sobriety, unless they were able to meet the family for feedback.
Since there are no boards to approve our growth in the programme… sober can be what ever you want it to be…
Just not drinking or even not being impaired.. to an ongoing growth,, based on self examination, with a second pair of eyes, usually a sponsor.. and helping others to grow also.
The choice is ours.. and I for one believe God is not done with me, and I try as best I can to do the things most likely to foster spiritual growth making me a help to others in and out of the fellowship
