むかし誰かが、「最良の祈りと黙想とは、24時間続くものだ」と言っていました。つまり、「よし、今からひざまずいて祈ろう」とか「これからX分間瞑想しよう」と区切るのではなく、目覚めているすべての時間を意識的なつながりの中で過ごすことのほうが効果的だということです。
1日のうち数分だけ意識的に、自我よりも大きな力への通路を開いておこうとするのではなく、今この瞬間にそれを実践すればいいのです。なぜ待つ必要があるのでしょうか？
もちろん、理論的には、すべての呼吸や思考を
ハイヤーパワー（HP=ハイヤーパワー）神、または高次の力、自分を超えた大きな力。意志と生き方をゆだねる対象。
や神の意識に捧げることは不可能です。 しかし一方で、そのつながりは常に存在しているとも言えるでしょう。いわば、私たちが「見えなくなっているだけ」なのです。
正直に言うと、私は膝をついて祈ったり、正式に黙想したりすることはあまりありません。 しかし、実際にやってみると、とても心地よいものです。 私ができる限り実践しているのは、そのつながりが常に存在し、チャンネルが常に開かれていることを思い出すことです。 なんというか、横ではなく上を見るだけのことなのかもしれません。もしかすると、それこそが神の御心なのかもしれません。 名声や権力を求めて人々が争い、私自身も巻き込まれがちなこの世界のドラマや苦悩に気を取られるのではなく、ただ空を見上げ、地に足をつけて生きることです。
ともあれ今日、最初の一杯を飲まないでいられるよう助けてくれて、仲間の皆さんありがとうございます。

Once upon a time someone told me the best kind of prayer and meditation is the 24 hour kind. In other words instead of saying “OK— now I’m getting on my hands and praying” or “now I’m sitting meditating for X amount of time” it’s more effective to be in conscious contact every waking moment.
Instead of giving a few moments a day to deliberately working on keeping the channel open to the power greater than my ego, do it, well, right now. Why wait?
Of course in theory it is impossible to devote every breath, every thought to that Higher Power/God Consciousness, but on the other hand one could argue that the contact is always there. We just are “too blind to see,” so to speak.
So, I must confess, I don’t get down on my knees to pray or formally meditate too often, though when I do it feels good to do so. What I do practice as best I am able is to remember the contact is always there, the channel is always open. It’s almost just a matter of looking up rather than sideways, if that makes any sense. And maybe that’s God’s will, too. Rather than getting caught up and distracted by the drama and trauma of the world as people, myself included, vie for prestige and power, I just need to look up at the sky and keep my feet on the ground.
Anyhow, thank you all for helping me not pick up that first drink today.
