「毎週？」
「うん、そうだよ」
「毎週行っても構わないのか？」
「そう、ゲロや二日酔いに打ち勝つんだよ」
それから約2ヵ月後、私が授業計画を練っていると、ラリーが教室に入ってきました。彼はニヤニヤしていました。「昨日の夜、初めてミーティングに行ったんだ。この一週間シラフなんだよ」
私は立ち上がり、大男を抱きしめて言いました。「現実の世界へようこそ。きっと気に入ると思うよ。 何か問題があれば、話し合おう」
それ以来、エクササイクルに乗るたびに、ラリーと私は、自分たちが何をしているのか、そしてどれだけ感謝しているのかを話し合いました。
それが私には上手く行ったやり方です。

I worked out every noon hour on one of two exercycles in the prison's gymnasium. I was the institution's English teacher for inmates. One day, Larry, the school officer, who was the only other veteran at the institution got on the other exercycle by my side. He was a jarhead with medals for bravery and being wounded twice by North Vietnamese Army regulars. I was a swab jockey, stationed in Hue City before the infamous Tet happened. Larry looked bad. "Man, do I ever have a hangover," he said. I smiled. He continued. "Your buddies who you ride to work with say you don't drink at all. Is that true?"
"Yup," I said.
"Did you used to drink?"
I nodded. "Plenty."
A half year later, Larry asked out of the blue. "Do you go to meetings?"
"What are you talking about?"
"AA meetings."
"Yup."
"How long you been in AA?"
"Long time."
"How often do you go to meetings?"
"Oh, three times a week. Sometimes more."
"Every week?"
"Uh huh."
"You don't mind going every week?"
"They beat puking and hangovers."
About two months later, Larry walked into my classroom while I was working on lesson plans. He was grinning. "I went to my first meeting last night. I've been sober for a week."
I stood, hugged the big guy, and said, "Welcome to the world of reality. I'm certain you're going to like it. If you have any problems, we can talk."
From that point on, every time we were on the exercycles, Larry and I would talk about how we were doing plus how grateful we were.
And that's the way it works for me.
