Hi, everyone. My name is Dave and I am an alcoholic. Thanks for a wonderful topic and lead, dear Susan, and for your friendship. Welcome to all - especially Yuu and Claire, who’ve just joined us — and congrats to AA (and HP!) for any milestones we celebrate this week. The program works!
Very early in my recovery, I was introduced to the need to “pass it on”. At just 90 days, I was told to adopt a man as my first sponsee. At early meetings in San Diego, I witnessed members surrounding newcomers and talking with them after meetings, ensuring they had phone numbers and meeting locations. I had been invited to coffee or “the meeting after the meeting” and as was encouraging to do the same for those even newer than I.
I was stationed on a Navy aircraft carrier back then and our pool of AA’s active in recovery was small, so there were not many sponsors to go around. My sponsor told me to get involved right away — but just be sure I stayed ahead of my pigeons in the Steps so I had something to offer them! I sponsored over 20 men in those early years. Few stayed sober, but I did.
When I transferred from California to the DC area, I found meetings and sought out the people who were active and involved in sharing the program with others. I liked what they had and wanted it. So I continued to do what they did.
I still have a sponsor and I still sponsor other men. It is both an obligation freely undertaken and an incomparable blessing.
