私の家系には、関節炎・変形性骨疾患の病歴があります。私は、年とともに、あちこちの痛みに悩まされてきました。ここ数年、歩きづらかったり、椅子から立ち上がるのが大変だったり、ベッドで寝返りを打った りするのが難しくなりました。最近は、さらに悪くなっています。タイレノールという薬は、あまり効きませんでした。X線検査の結果が出るまでの１週間、ステロイドである プレドニンを、服薬しました。今回は、X線検査で異常はなかったので、抗炎症薬の話を始めるつもりです。
今日、私が分かち合いたのは、６日間プレドニンを飲んだら、朝目覚めて、薬物中毒について、認識を新たにしたということです！プレドニンは、ステロイドにすぎないかもしれま せんが、副作用で依存症になる可能性があります。（アルコール依存症とは、本当に違っている、と考えています。）今週は、４０代に戻ったような気分です。バックパッキ ングに行ったり、家具を移動したり、重いものを運んだりできるようになりました。私は、一晩中寝ています。１日５マイルは歩いています。夕方になっても、不機嫌になることは ありません。嬉しくて、なんだかテンションが上がりました。
今日、私は突然、気づきました。鎮痛剤の大量服用は、(ちょっと…) こんな感じなのだろう、と。アルコール依存症とは、全然、違います。薬を飲んで、世界に飛び出します。そこでは、私が征服者です。今朝の目覚めは、最高でした！
「私を分かってくれる」アルコホーリクの仲間がいてうれしいです。ソーバーでいられることに、感謝しています。特に、私が薬物中毒でないことに感謝しています！

１ 診断書を書いてもらう前に、自分がアルコホーリクであることを、必ず医師に伝えてください。
２ 定められた期間・定められた量だけ服用してください。
３ 不安定なときには、家族の方に薬を渡して、医師の指示に従って、薬をもらうようにしてください。
４ 薬が余ったら、捨ててください。

現在の処方基準が分からないので、多少古いかもしれません。
医師が、手術後に使用する３０日分の鎮痛剤の処方箋を手渡してくれました。そのとき、私は尋ねました。「たいていの人」は、どのくらいの期間、その薬を必要とするのですか？人によって、それぞれ異なることは、十分に理解していることを認めた上でです。医師は、通常は３～４日で十分、その後さらに２日続けて夜間に１日服用する、と答えました。
なぜ３０日分の処方箋を渡したのかという質問に、それが、保険会社の約款に記載されている内容である、と彼は答えました。
その経験は、私にとってもう一つのルールとなり、役立っています。

I'm Nancy and I'm alcoholic and 76 years old with 35 years of sobriety...HOWEVER, I need/want to share this off-topic experience and I feel this group will understand. I will share on our weekly ESH topic later.
My family has a history of arthritis and degenerative bone disease. I've had lots of aches and pains as I've gotten older - in the last few years walking funny, having trouble getting out of chairs, difficulty turning over in bed, etc. It's been worse lately and Tylenol wasn’t helping much. My doctor put me on Prednisone, which is a steroid, for a week while we waited for the results of an X-ray. X-ray found nothing serious at this time and I'll start talking anti-inflammatory pills.
The point of my share today is I woke up this morning after 6 days of prednisone with a new understanding of drug addiction! Prednisone might be only a steriod, but the effect on me could become addictive! (Alcohol addiction really is different, I think.) This week I've been feeling like I was back in my 40s and could go backpacking and move my furniture around and carry heavy thing. I sleep all night, walk 5 miles, and am not grumpy in the evening. I've been happy and somewhat hyper.
I suddenly realized today that this must be (sorta...) what taking lots of pain pills must feel like. It's very different from an alcohol addiction. I just pop a pill and head out into the world that I'm sure I can conquer. What an awakening for me this morning!
I'm glad to have alcoholic friends who "get me" and grateful for my sobriety, and ESPECIALLY thankful that I do not have a drug addiction!

Thanks Nancy! It’s easy to see why thousands die from OxyContin and other pain meds. I was taught four rules regarding pain pills.
1 Make sure your Dr knows you are a recovering alcoholic before he writes the prescription
2 Take only the amount prescribed for the period prescribed
3 if shaky, give the bottle to a family member to dole them out to according to Drs orders
4 Throw away any left over pills
If I fail to follow these guidelines, I should raise my hand as a newcomer

Hi All, Laurie here, alcoholic. Thanks Nancy and Jeffrey for sharing and would like to add one thought to the rules.
This may be somewhat dated as I don't know current prescribing standards.
As a doctor was handing me a 30 day prescription for pain pills to use after surgery, I asked him how long "most people" needed the pills, acknowledging that I fully understood everyone was different. He advised the 3-4 days was usually enough, followed by a couple of additional days taking one at night.
In response to my question about why he was giving me a 30 day script, he advised that was what the insurance company standard stated.
That experience became another rule for me which I've found helpful.
