ミーティングで自分の名前を名乗り、アルコホリックであることを認めるのは、謙虚さに基づく行為であるべきで、誇りのバッジではありません。ドミニク・D、アルコホリックとして、私はAAのミーティング会場にいる誰よりも優れているわけでも、劣っているわけでもありません。これが、AAが匿名性を霊的に高い基準として重視する理由の一つです。匿名性があるからこそ、AAには「大物」が存在しないのです。もう一つの理由は伝統11にあります。それは、報道、ラジオ、映画のレベルで匿名性を維持することです。ソーシャルメディアもこの伝統に該当します。他人の匿名性をソーシャルメディアで破る行為は伝統の違反であり、こうした行為が常態化しないよう対処する必要があります。また、伝統11は経験から生まれたものです。有名人として自分がAAに貢献できる考えた人々が、AAでの

について大々的に報じられた後、それほど時間が経たないうちに酒浸りの溝に逆戻りしてしまったという実例があったのです。

などの事情が知られないように守ることであり、それは謙虚さを表しています。しかし、ソーシャルメディア上で自己中心的な目的や利己的な理由で匿名性を利用する場合、それは美徳ではなく、武器として使われていることになります。

最後に、もし私がソーシャルメディアを含む公の場で自分がリカバリー中であると表明する場合、AAを自分のアイデンティティに結びつけて公言しないように最善を尽くしています。これはAAとその匿名性の伝統を尊重するためです。ただし、キリスト教中心のリカバリー

Topic: your experience about the significance, spiritual and otherwise, of anonymity. What does it mean to you?
What does anonymity have to do with humility?
Dominic recovered alcoholic. A good place to start is writing in the 12x12 on Tradition 12. All of this is covered there. Additionally, the pamphlet on “Anonymity” from AA in the UK is also an informative read. Here is the link:

As for me, since the beginning, I have not worn my alcoholism on my sleeve nor my forehead. Keeping my anonymity in some circles has been important and serves no purpose to break my anonymity unless I can be of help to someone or where transparency about my alcoholism is necessary. I did have one AA person blow my anonymity on social media once without my permission. I confronted him about it and I’m hopeful this person will not do a foolish thing like this again to me or anyone else in recovery.
When we say our first name and admit we are alcoholic in a meeting, this is supposed to be an act of humility, not a badge of honor. As Dominic D. Alcoholic, I am no better, no worse than anyone else in the AA rooms. This is one reason why AA holds anonymity to a high spiritual standard. Anonymity is one reason we have no big shots in AA. The other reason is Tradition 11, maintaining anonymity at the level of press, radio, and film. Social Media fits into this tradition. People blowing other’s anonymity on social media is a tradition violation and must be addressed to avoid this behavior from becoming a norm. Also Tradition 11 was born out experience, those who thought they could help AA by there celebrity, found themselves back in the drunk-laden ditch not very long after making headlines about being sober in AA.
Anonymity to protect someone’s identity from being exposed to people that the person does not want to be identified for a good purpose such as their alcoholism is humility. When Anonymity is used to hide one’s identity on social media for self-seeking or selfish reasons, anonymity then is used not as a virtue but as a weapon.
One of the ways I protect my sobriety is through my anonymity in some circles. Not everyone sees alcoholics or those in recovery as we do, so I am careful to use my full identity mostly when I can help someone. As I’ve grown in my sobriety, I’ve loosened up on my anonymity some, yet I still find it important and spiritually significant when used correctly.
Lastly, if I identify myself as being in recovery in a public forum including social media, I do my best to not identify Alcoholics Anonymous attached to my identity out of respect for AA and the anonymity traditions. The exception to this is when I am asked to speak in Christ-centered recovery programs. Anonymity protects both the individual and AA at large including meetings and groups.
