I'm an alcoholic and my name is Robert. Thank you for chairing the meeting this week, Chuck. I haven't actually read the "Plain Language Big Book" though I've seen a copy of it at the Area Assembly. I personally don't feel the need to read it. I'm okay with the language of the copies of the Big Book I have. I got sober with the third edition of the book /Alcoholics Anonymous/ and when the fourth edition came out I purchased too. A few years ago a chaired a workshop on the 12 Steps that lasted 15 weeks and at our last weekly meeting the participants gave me a facsimile copy of the first edition of the Big Book as published in 1939. I also have two French translations of the Big Book.
As a post graduate student of English literature I had to read plenty of books where the language was a lot more archaic than the wordings of the Big Book /Alcoholics Anonymous/, which is certainly less archaic than Shakespeare or Chaucer. For me it's like watching a movie dating from the 1940s, say /Casablanca/ with Humphrey Bogart. It doesn't bother me.
So I'll simply talk about the importance of reading the Big Book in whatever version. When I got sober, I started attending AA meetings, lots of AA meetings, some in French, and some in English. I attended two or three meetings a day for three or four months. I loved AA meetings. But then in the fourth month I hit a wall. I realized I hadn't changed very much. I was still very self-centred, I still had sexual obsessions, though I did not act on them since I was sober, and my mind was still very confused. So I called the sober friend who had taken me to my first AA meeting and told him about my predicament. He didn't tell me what to do, but he told me where I would find the answer to my problems. "In the 12 Steps", he said, "as they are described in the Big Book." He went on, "The steps are not simply made to be read out loud at the beginning of meetings. They are a set of principles with concrete actions to take and they are meant to be taken and practised in your life the way it is explained in the Big Book."
So I started reading the Book and studying it. That's where I learned to apply the Steps to my life. It led me to recovery from alcoholism. In the Foreword to the first edition of the BB, it says, "To show other alcoholics /precisely how we have recovered/ is the main purpose of this book.
Over the years I have met members of AA who had never read the Big Book. I'm talking about members who had been attending AA meetings 20 or even 40 years. I believe it's easier when you read the Book with someone else. I used to attend an English meeting called /There is a solution/ in Montreal, where we read through the first 164 pages of the book a few pages at a time and discussed what we had just read. In June 2018 I left Montreal and went to live in a small village in a French populated agricultural area on the south shore of the St. Lawrence River. Since there were no AA meetings in the village, I started one which was called /Il y a une solution/ modelled on the English Montreal meeting. We read the first 186 pages (equivalent to 164 in English). With the pandemic, it became a ZOOM meeting in French that's still in existence today after six years. In 2022 I moved back to Montreal, but I still attend that meeting. In fact it's scheduled for tonight Monday, at 8:00 P.M. It lasts one hour, and when we reach page 186, we start over again at the Doctor's Opinion (L'opinion du médecin) and read on. We learn from each other's understanding of what we just read. And it's always a new discovery, as if there was something we hadn't understood in the previous readings or that was added to the book when we weren't looking.
