アルコホーリクのマークです。アルコホーリクス・アノニマス（AA）に心から感謝しています。最初の一杯に手を出さずに済み、そのおかげで回復の奇跡を体験できたからです。昨日、ギリシャに戻りました。太陽の光に迎えられ、今週初めの洪水や土砂崩れは無事に避けられました。

の話題をありがとう、チャック。私はそれを知っていて、ざっと目を通したことがあります。
私の
ホームグループAAの中で自分が所属し、活動の拠点となるグループ
には、長年の経験を持つAAメンバーがいて、よくこう言います。「誰かが数年の
ソブラエティ神様・ハイヤーパワーとつながり、お酒を飲まない生活
を過ぎると、今私たちが『
ビッグブックビッグブック・AAの基本テキスト（書籍）
』と呼んでいる本の最初の版を書いた初期のAAメンバーよりも長くAAにいることになる」と。そうです、それは今もAAの “聖書” であり、謙虚さ（「これはあくまで提案です……私たちはわずかしか知りません」）と、大胆な成功の主張とが混ざったものです。正直に言えば、それは限られたサンプルに基づいた主張でもあります。
個人的には、オリジナル（英語版）の
ビッグブックビッグブック・AAの基本テキスト（書籍）
の最初の164ページ（第11章まで）が好きです。

の勉強会に十分参加してきたので、21世紀の口語英語にはうまく翻訳できない言い回しや奇妙な表現に対する違和感も克服できました。もちろん今では、

はナバホ語を含め、およそ70の言語に翻訳されています。
数年前 — おそらく今からほぼ10年前 —

の第5版が制作中だと知ったとき、私は非常に興味を持ちました。特に英語が母語でない若い世代の多くが、理解に苦しむことを知っていたからです。第5版は結局「プレイン・ランゲージ・

」となり、より幅広い読者にとって身近で理解しやすい内容にすることを目的としていました。
私たちの
ホームグループAAの中で自分が所属し、活動の拠点となるグループ
では、「プレイン・ランゲージ版」がまもなく発売されると聞き、それを読むための文献ミーティングを開けると楽しみにしていました。しかし、他のAAの出版物とは違い、無料のPDFとしては入手できず、読みたい人は電子版を購入するか、図書館で探す必要があります。さらに、紙の書籍版はほとんど手に入らない状態でした。
そこで私は電子書籍版を購入してみましたが、いくつか重要な違いがあることに気づきました。主に、性別に関してより中立的であることや、すべての人が「
ハイヤーパワー（HP=ハイヤーパワー）神、または高次の力、自分を超えた大きな力。意志と生き方をゆだねる対象。
」をキリスト教の天の父だと仮定していない点です。（当時、アメリカ人の90％がキリスト教徒と答えていましたが、現在でも多くの人は何らかの神や普遍的な霊を信じています。それでも、キリスト教徒になる人が一人いる一方で、6人はキリスト教から離れ、霊的であっても特定の宗教には所属しなくなるようです。少なくともアメリカではそうです。）
「

」という言葉は、オリジナルの
ビッグブックビッグブック・AAの基本テキスト（書籍）
では数回しか登場しませんが、プレーン・ランゲージ版では頻繁に使われており、「自分なりに理解する神」であることを強調しています。また、著述の視点も変わり、アルコホーリクを、長年苦労してきた妻に支えられる男性として想定するのではなく、性別に配慮し、
アルコホリズムアルコール依存症のみならず霊的な病
の多様性をより現実的に捉えた内容になっています。
「第八章 妻たちへ」という章がプレーン・ランゲージ版では「パートナーへ」となっており、私にとっては重要な改善です。（アルコホーリクの家庭で育った私は、母／妻がアルコホーリックで、父／夫が皆をコントロールして変えようとしていた後にアラノンに出会った、というケースでした。）そして、この章を不快に感じたのは私だけではありません。ある

のミーティングでは、「第八章 妻たちへ」が読まれる回を意図的に飛ばす人もいました。
プレーン・ランゲージ版で興味深いと感じたもう一つの点は、ステップや
12の伝統AA共同体の一体性を守るための12の決まり
の短いもの・長文のもの、そして
12の概念AAのサービスAAの奉仕活動
のための12の決まり などの各章を（改訂前の内容と）比較しているところです。私の生涯でも言語や社会は変化していますし、この本が初めて出版されてから86年の間にはさらに大きく変わっています。
まとめると、私にとっては、AAが現代のアルコホーリクにとってより身近で理解しやすいものになるよう適応しようとしているのは素晴らしいことです。私が知りたいのは、AAに新しく参加した人がこの新しい版を役立つと感じるかどうかです。
そして、この新版を作るために時間と労力を注いでくれたすべての無名の仲間たちに感謝しています。

Mark, alcoholic. Grateful as can be to AA for helping me not pick up that first drink and thereby allow the magic of recovery happen. We arrived back in Greece yesterday to sunshine, missing the floods and landslides from earlier in the week.
Thanks for the topic of the Plain Language BB, Chuck. I’m familiar with it and have skimmed it.
We have a long-time AA in my home group who likes to mention that after people have more than a few years of sobriety, they have been in AA longer than the original AA’s who wrote that first edition of what we now call the Big Book. Yes, it is and remains the “bible” of AA, a mix of humility (“these are but suggestions”…. We know only a little), and audacious claims of success based on— let’s face it— a limited sample size.
Personally, I’m fond of the original Big Book’s first 164 pages, having been to enough Big Book study sessions to have gotten over my issues with the some of the phrasing and odd references that don’t translate well into our 21st century vernacular English. Now, of course, the BB is translated into something like 70 languages….including Navajo!
A few years ago— probably close to ten now—when I read a 5th edition of the BB was in the works, I was very interested, knowing that many of a younger generation— especially if English is not their original language— struggle with it. The 5th edition turned out to be the Plain Language BB, and the goal was to make it more relevant and relatable to a wider audience.
In our home group, we were excited when the Plain Language was about to be released, thinking we’d have a literature meeting devoted to reading it. But, unlike other AA publications, it isn’t available for free PDF download, so people wanting to read it either need to buy it electronically or find it in a library. And the hard copy version was nearly impossible to come by.
So I bought an e-book version and found it did have a few key differences, mainly in it being more gender-neutral, not assuming everyone everyone’s idea of a Higher Power being the Heavenly Father of Christianity. (Back then, 90% of Americans identified as Christian, but apparently even though most people still believe in some sort of God or universal spirit, for everyone who becomes Christian, six people leave Christianity and become unaffiliated if still spiritual, at least in the US).
The term “Higher Power” shows up only a few times in the original Big Book, but it’s all over the Plain Language version, emphasizing “God of your own understanding”. And the book’s perspective has changed from assuming the alcoholic is a male married to a long suffering wife to being more gender balanced and realistic in terms of the spectrum of alcoholism.
The chapter “To Wives” is now “To Partners” which to me is an important improvement. (Growing up in an alcoholic household, it was the mother/wife who was the alcoholic and the father/husband trying to control and change everyone before finding Al-Anon. And I know I’m not the only one who found this chapter annoying; in one Big Book meeting, there were people who deliberately skipped the meetings where To Wives was to be read.)
The other thing I found interesting about the Plain Language version is where they compare sections— including the steps and short and long form of the traditions as well as the concepts. Language and society has changed in my lifetime and even more-so in the 86 years since the book was first published.
So, in conclusion, for me it’s great that AA is trying to adapt to be, yes, more relatable and relevant to the current crop of alcoholics with a desire to stop drinking. What I would love to know is whether someone new to AA finds this new version helpful or not.
And I’m grateful to all the anonymous folks who dedicated time and effort into coming up with this version.
