Topic: So... what is your take on the Plain Language Big Book? Or an any other edition of Alcoholics Anonymous?
Dominic, a recovered alcoholic. First, I want to be clear: the PLBB is not a Fifth Edition of the Big Book. It’s not intended to replace the Fourth Edition. Its stated purpose is to serve as a companion guide, using more contemporary language that younger generations might relate to. The idea, as presented, is to make the message of AA more accessible. From what I’ve seen—on places like Reddit—reception is mixed.
When I compare key passages side by side, it’s obvious to me that the PLBB significantly waters down the depth and context of the original Big Book. The overarching theme of the Big Book—our need to seek God—is also far less present, at least from what I’ve reviewed so far.
Honestly, I think this was, and is, a bad idea. Various groups of younger AA members have pushed to revise the Big Book and the 12x12 for years, and I don’t believe that’s the right direction. We don’t rewrite classic literature for a reason: the power is in the integrity of the original text. To me, changing the Big Book in this way only dilutes AA’s message and weakens the depth of the spiritual solution it offers.
And practically speaking, a sponsor should be walking a sponsee through the Big Book anyway. So, the argument that the PLBB will somehow “carry the message to more alcoholics” feels weak to me. In my experience, Big Book literacy directly correlates with the quality of mind, body, and spiritual sobriety. When we lose that depth, we lose the important key aspects of gift we have been graced with. I’ve also noticed that many folks who complain about the ‘Big Book Language are seemingly often not yet willing to go to any lengths in their recovery nor yet willing to set aside their prejudices.
Personally, my favorite version of the Big Book is the original manuscript.”
