Hi everyone, my name is Pam and I am an alcoholic. Congratulations on 38 years this week, Robert! Thank you for the topic, and thank you for sharing the details of how it has worked with you.
When I returned to recovery three years ago, I found someone who read through the book with me as you described, Robert. Including the table of contents. This worked very well for me as I want to follow the steps exactly as they are in the Big Book and not worksheets and workbooks as I’ve seen used around the tables. I also benefited from the regular in-person contact with my sponsor.
In early sobriety the first time, there was another thing that worked for me. There was a tough little bird named Dee who noticed me at meetings. She talked to me. She told me to go for dinner or coffee with others, though she did not. She gave me prayer cards and a book of daily meditations. Since I am not currently working formally with anyone, I am trying to “work” with others in the way Dee did. The way she was with me had a very positive impact and kept me coming to meetings until I eventually got a formal sponsor, so I’m trying to do the same.
