Good afternoon, ESH,

Thanks, Pam, for chairing this week and congratulations on 44 years of sobriety! This is awesome! Congratulations as well to anyone celebrating a sobriety milestone this week, and welcome to anyone new to ESH.

Topic: Befuddlement, Lack of Clarity, & Steps 3 & 11

Dominic, recovered alcoholic. Thank you, Pam, for your honest and heartfelt lead. What stood out most to me wasn't simply your 44 years of sobriety, although that is certainly inspiring. It was your willingness to openly admit that lately you've been feeling "befuddled," that you've been leaning heavily on Step Eleven, and sensing that perhaps something is missing in your practice of Step Three. I found that refreshing because long-term recovery doesn't eliminate seasons of uncertainty—it gives us a way to walk through them.

Early in sobriety, I became fascinated by the concept of willingness. Looking back, I realized I had always been willing to do what I wanted to do, but not nearly as willing to do the things I knew I needed to do. Even after two DUI convictions and court-ordered attendance at AA, I still wasn't ready. It took another nineteen years after Pam got sober before I became truly willing to surrender and do something about my alcoholism.

As I continued working the Steps, I noticed another pattern. I had a tendency to worry about the "minors" in life, second-guess myself, and create unnecessary misery through fearful thinking. The inventory process helped me identify many of my core fears and expose them for what they were—impostors that had far more influence over my thinking than they deserved.

Years later, as I became more interested in mindset and personal growth, I realized there was something even deeper. While the Twelve Steps had greatly diminished fear's grip on my life, I had grown up with a fear-and- scarcity mindset that still surfaced from time to time. Then I began asking myself a different question: If I am trying to align my life with God's will through Steps Three and Eleven, what kind of mindset would God want me to cultivate?

The answer gradually became clear. God wasn't calling me to live from fear and scarcity but from love, trust, and abundance. Philippians 4:8 became especially meaningful as a reminder to intentionally direct my thoughts toward whatever is true, honorable, just, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent, and praiseworthy, rather than allowing fear to dominate my thinking. That realization has helped me cultivate what I think of as a "Love and Abundance Core." It doesn't mean life is free of problems or uncertainty. It means that even in adversity, my default response is becoming trust rather than fear.

Pam also mentioned Dan K. Dan became a good friend through ESH, and we often corresponded about recovery and faith. One day he asked if I knew Kathy, an ESH member in California who was living with progressive MS. I told him I didn't. He simply suggested that I go visit her.

At first, I thought I would be helping Kathy. Instead, she became one of God's gifts to me. Susan S. from ESH and I visited her many times over the years. Despite her declining health, Kathy consistently displayed gratitude, joy, humor, and faith. Sometimes we'd simply visit; other times we'd end up having a little AA meeting together. I always left those visits more encouraged than when I arrived. Kathy demonstrated that peace doesn't depend on our circumstances but on where we place our trust.

So when Pam speaks about feeling befuddled, I don't hear weakness. I hear someone with forty-four years of sobriety continuing to practice rigorous honesty and relying on the very tools that have sustained her all these years. That gives me hope.

For me, Steps Three and Eleven remain inseparable. Step Three is the decision to trust God with my life and to do the things He would have me do. Step Eleven is how I renew that decision every day through prayer, meditation, and conscious contact with Him. They don't always remove uncertainty, but they do replace fear with trust. They remind me that I don't have to understand everything to continue walking the path God has laid before me.

Thank you, Pam, for another thoughtful lead, and thank you all for letting me share.

Dominic D.
