ESHExperience, Strength, and Hope -

Hi ESH Fellows,
I’m a loner, and I always have been. For that reason, the emphasis on “we” in AA has scared me from the very beginning.
Since I’ve been in AA and 12-step recovery, I’ve met many people I consider friends who have helped me, including those who have been generous enough to sponsor me and even.
These days, however, when I think about the “we” of the program, I think most strongly about my basic need to be in a group with other alcoholics where I admit that I, too, am an alcoholic.
I did try, once, to spend a few months without meetings, and all it did was turn me into a dry drunk who almost drank again.
So I know I have to be here. Sometimes I want to, and I’ll be honest, sometimes I don’t. But I can’t run the risk of picking up again.
And yet, despite all the ways my alcoholic thinking makes me want to be different from my fellows, the thing that gives me the most consolation is knowing that today I get to be part of a Higher Power whose love embraces everyone, and not just me alone, and in that way I’m just like everyone else, just another bozo on the bus.
Thanks for reading, and I wish you all a joyful, sober week.
