My name is Peter and I'm an alcoholic.
Thanks Marc for your topic. I'm forever grateful for AA's only requirement for membership being a desire to stop drinking as I definitley hadn't stopped for the first few months of attending meetings and probably had no concept of total abstinence. In hindsight I do know that I was spiraling downward more rapidly then I could ever foresee and that you people were here to catch me.
Now several decades later, my life has unfolded in amazing ways beyond my wildest imagination. Somewhere along the way I read about Buddhists asking to change the word "god" to "good" in their meetings' steps. I'm comforted by Bill W.'s reply:
"To some of us, the idea of substituting “good” for “God” in the Twelve Steps will seem like a watering down of AA’s message. We must remember that AA’s Steps are suggestions only. A belief in them as they stand is not at all a requirement for membership among us. This liberty has made AA available to thousands who never would have tried at all, had we insisted on the Twelve Steps just as written. (Alcoholics Anonymous Comes of Age," Page 81, 1957)
