Welcome to anyone who is new or relatively new to AA or to ESH...I hope you find here what I and many others have found, a way of living which works. Congratulations to any and all celebrating an AA milestone!!!
Thanks Mark for your share and topic of "What does AA (and the third tradition in particular) mean to you? What is the core of the program of recovery to you?" When I got here I really did not like the reference to God in our Steps, literature or the sharing of others. Though I would have told you what an open-minded man that I was, the truth with was anything that had to do with God my mind was closed. In fact early on when someone at a meeting was talking about God a little too much for my liking I would be the next to share, almost jumping out of my seat, and telling everyone that was BS and no one has to believe in God and on and on. I knew so much in my first few months you understand. Thankfully I hit a bottom in sobriety where I became willing to actually do the actions laid out in the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous and my life was transformed. I cannot deny the power of God, nor do I want to hide the change like some saying "I know less today than when I got here" or some other false humility statement. My belief from reading the literature is that any alcoholic who wants to be a member can be just that, an AA member. And there's nothing they have to do when joining...even recover. I won't bore those who refuse to believe in a Power and I wouldn't force anyone to anything. My suggestion, if asked, would be to read the Basic Text with an open mind and see what the early members did to recover and then ask yourself "Do I want the freedom from the bondage of self, the victory over alcohol that they received by following the AA program?". I'm so grateful for the loving respect the Big Book shows where even a person like myself... who fought against the idea of God and certainly was never going to be like that...can have a change of heart and mind that I didn't think I needed. I'm also thankful that Bill did not hook AA up with any denominational religion or faith, even Christianity, as the concept of God as I understand God, can and probably is different for each of us and no one should be denied recovery. But to Now anyone is free to believe and do exactly as they want to...and looking at what AA has become in many places that is happening more and more. But if I truly care enough about others to want to help them I'm going to show them the life-giving program which points us towards a Power greater then ourselves that we absolutely need to solve our problem. That for me is the core of the AA program.
Of course this has just been my experience...yours may be different.
