My name is Pam and I’m an alcoholic. Thank you Mark, for the topic. It’s timely for me as I am recently reacting in meetings to certain persons who are spouting (loudly) religious and political beliefs both just before and during meetings. I’ve always loved the variety of people who show up to meetings, but lately not so much. What AA is coming to mean to me is that I show up no matter what. No matter about the above-mentioned people. Per tradition three, they can be there just as I can be there. I am learning and re-learning tolerance and patience and acceptance. AA meetings are my “church” even though I’m not, nor have I ever been, a church member in the traditional sense. A power greater than me always shows up in these meetings regardless of who is present. As I settle in and quit reacting, I can feel my mind being cracked open just a little more, and my soul healing just a little more. And when that happens, I’m less likely to search for a drink or anything else to relieve the tensions that arise in life.
