(I can't do it; we can.)」

For this week's topic, please share your response, ideas, concerns, or experiences with "I can't do it; we can."

Hi George and everybody else here,
I'm an alcoholic and my name is Robert. It was thanks to a former drinking and drugging buddy of mine that I came to AA. I guess he was my first Higher Power. I drank every day and he was sober one whole year. I decided to listen to his suggestion and asked him to take me to an AA meeting. I loved meetings from the beginning. I quit drinking and went to meetings every day, sometimes twice or three times a day. After awhile I told my sober friend Luc that I was still very confused I didn't know what to do. He told me I would find the answer in the AA programme of recovery as described in the 12 Steps printed in the book *Alcoholics Anonymous*. I asked him to be my sponsor and he insisted I start working Step 4 and keep reading the Big Book.

I did Step 4 and found it liberating to start understanding myself and recognizing some (not all yet) of my character defects, and weaknesses, like for example an old resentment that was still keeping me awake at night grinding my teeth at 42 years old for something that happened when I was 11 years old. The Steps told me how to let go of that, forgive and pray for Brother Bernard, my 6th grade teacher who had *sadistically* hit me on the hand with an 18 inch ruler for... I didn't even remember what. Well, I realized and admitted to myself that I was the little smart Alec Know-it-all in the class and he probably didn't know what to do with me.

But when I came to Step 4, admitting my faults to myself, to God and to another human being, I started balking. That's when I started paying attention to the phrasing of that Step: "WE admitted..." Who was that "WE"? They were the countless sober alcoholics who had come before me. So who was I to think I could improve on the 12 Steps? The "WE" was in reality a reassuring signpost reminding me that this was a programme that had worked for all those alcoholics that came before me. It would work for me as well. Trust the process! as I was repeatedly told by a former AA delegate.

And it worked. I haven't had a drink of alcohol for over 38 years. Thank you all for being on the same road with me. We is Us now.

Cheers,
Robert
