"I've found that laughter can be healing."
This is serious business, Dorothy (^^. I used to take myself very seriously. I was miserable (and made everybody else around me miserable. It was like there was a cloud of unhappiness over my head, and anyone coming near me felt miserable. Those I loved the most suffered the most. I had to make amends for that; it's still a priority for me to try to make my family and friends happy.
Before I came into AA, I couldn't laugh. When somebody told me a funny joke and I tried to laugh, I felt pain in the back of my neck. I realized later that I had been so tense, I couldn't laugh.
But at the first AA meetings I attended I heard personal misadventures and incidents described with so much humour that I burst out laughing with everybody else. It was a deep and irresistible belly laugh. We were not laughing at the person telling the story, we were laughing with that person. I began understanding how my seriousness was in fact ridiculous. I once heard an AA member say, "If you learn to laugh at yourself, you'll have something to keep you happy and entertained for the rest of your life."
That seems to be true for me. My two children always laugh at me. That helps! It allows me to understand how I'm being ridiculous when I take myself too seriously.
Laughing at my foibles has allowed me to begin understanding myself.
So I'm grateful to AA for having reintroduced me to myself and now being able to be a positive presence in my family.
Peace,
Robert
