ESHExperience, Strength, and Hope -

Hey, ESH. Thanks for the topic. I remember learning about Rule 62 when I first came into the program. I especially remember the story of the group that came up with 61 rules, and then Dr. Bob suggested that maybe they “should not to take themselves too damn seriously.”
I’d love to be able to say that I don’t take myself too seriously today. I wish I had come that far, but I haven’t. I still feel like, with the responsibilities that I’ve accumulated in sobriety, when I let myself loosen up too much, big mistakes happen and people get hurt.
I think the place where there’s been growth, though, is in the small things that don’t really matter, and especially in my ability to know what things really don’t matter. I still occasionally can freak out about something someone said, the look on a person’s face, or even just a general feeling of inadequacy around something as simple as holding a friendly conversation. Are these worth controlling? Likely not.
But I’ve learned that whether I do these things well or whether I do them perfectly doesn’t matter all that much. What seems to matter is that I accept exactly where I’m at, that I’m open to growing through the help of my higher power, and that when my insecurity comes up, I accept that too as another cue from my higher power to just take things in stride.
I guess what I’m saying is that if I am living a life where I’m trying to do my higher power’s will, that does end up being a very serious matter. And my sobriety is a very serious matter. But I like how this rule reminds me today that I can take that too far, applying it to all sorts of things that don’t really matter at all.
I feel like there’s a serious prayer that could be written to accompany the Serenity Prayer:
“God, grant me the easygoingness to accept the things I cannot change, the seriousness to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know what needs to be taken seriously and what doesn’t.”
Then again, I can only imagine what Dr. Bob would say about me rewriting the serenity prayer.
Thanks for reading my share. I look forward to hearing more from the group this week.
Thanks,
Kevin
