Hi friends,
I'm an alcoholic and my name is Robert. I encountered this Fellowship of the Spirit in my early recovery. When I started attending AA meetings here in Montreal in 1988, there was a group called Midi Champlain. Midi means noon and Champlain is the name of the street where the meeting was held at 12 six days a week. It was a well attended meeting and there were alcoholics of all strata of society. There were street people, business people, lawyers, people who had spent time in a penitentiary, former prostitutes and even a translator (me).
Well, for the first time in my life I found myself before the meeting started sitting next to a guy I'd never seen before and who didn't look like he'd done any postgraduate studies in a university. Yet we were having a conversation about spiritual matters like the meaning of life, God, our role on Earth, etc. I was new to sobriety after having spent 22 years drinking every day, and this man, this "uneducated" stranger, had been sober for several years. None of my educated bar buddies talked like that. This was all new to me. I could relate profoundly for the first time with a stranger, and talk and learn about spiritual matters.
That's how I discovered the Fellowship of the Spirit in Alcoholics Anonymous. Thank you for reading this,
Robert
