Sorry for posting at the last minute. My name is Yuu, and I’m an alcoholic.

Attending AA meetings held in churches was actually how I first set foot in a church. At my sponsor’s suggestion, I also started sitting in the sanctuary from time to time for quiet meditation.

At one church, an old bell that had once been used there had been taken down and put on display near the entrance to the sanctuary, along with a plaque explaining its history. In the center of the bell was a small carving of Jesus, and because people coming to worship had touched it over the years, the figure of Jesus had become smooth and shiny.
I imagine that all kinds of people, from all sorts of backgrounds and circumstances, had come to that place and touched the bell, carrying their own thoughts and feelings with them. Of course, I have no idea who they were or what was in their hearts.
At another church, I saw a large statue of Mary. The same thing had happened there: because so many people had touched her hands over the years, they had become smooth and polished. Again, I found myself imagining all the people who had touched those hands.
It seemed to me that all those little acts of faith—the countless expressions of faith from people who had gathered around God—had somehow accumulated and become visible in the shiny figure of Jesus and the polished hands of Mary.

AA is not a religious organization, so we don’t all believe in the same thing. What we call it differs from person to person, and there are even people who have been sober for many years who say, “I want nothing to do with believing in a Higher Power.”
But when I talk with people like that, I sometimes feel that, even though they say they don’t believe in a Higher Power, there is something at the center of their hearts—a desire to be a good person and a sense of compassion for others.
Perhaps that warm, life-giving something is what our Tradition Two calls “a loving God.”
At the same time, the opposite of love is still there in all of us, and sometimes we hurt other people. I’m no exception, even though I believe in God and work the Steps. I’ve learned in AA that when you reach out with a warm hand, many people will reach back and warmly take yours. And if you slap someone with a cold hand, they are likely to slap you right back.

Today, I’m going to meet up with someone I recently got to know, and we’re going to read the Big Book and share our experience, strength, and hope. A lot of what we talk about is difficult to discuss in places like cafés in the middle of town, so I often find myself talking with other members on benches in church courtyards.

Thank you for letting me share.
Have a nice day!

This is an amateur translation, so take it with a grain of salt.
