Good morning, ESH,

Thank you, Debbie, for chairing this week and for the topic of “how do you deal with the challenges in your daily life.”

Congratulations to everyone celebrating a sobriety milestone this week, and welcome to anyone new to ESH.

Dominic, recovered alcoholic. We all have experience with this one, and here is mine.

In sobriety, I’ve been unemployed, had a heart attack, dealt with running injuries, and walked alongside my wife as she lives with progressive MS. Last year was especially tough for us. My youngest son also had a near-death experience. Life happens. Alongside the good, adversity comes too—and, especially as I get older, I’m reminded that none of us gets a pass.

Challenges, like change, are inevitable. Misery is optional.

What works for me is acceptance of “what is,” coupled with reliance on God through my Third Step surrender prayer practice. Surrender, in this context, means loosening my grip—“Let go and let God”—and letting go of my attempts to control outcomes that aren’t mine to control.

I also find that intentionally setting my mind on gratitude and looking for the positive—the bright side, the lesson, or even the opportunity within adversity—complements acceptance very well. It doesn’t mean pretending the difficult things aren’t difficult. It means accepting the reality in front of me, doing what is mine to do, and trusting God with the rest.

As a legacy ESH member, Lela, used to say, “I don’t know what the future holds, but I do know who holds it!”

Dominic D.
