Hi All,
Laurie here and I am an alcoholic, grateful to be sober today! Thanks, Susan, for the topic.
My favorite line in the Big Book is the italicized line on page 25 which simply says, "There is a solution." As a newcomer, I read those words over and over again. I needed those four words of hope.
I am grateful today for the gift of desperation that brought me into AA. A couple of weeks later that desperation was fading and I was starting to question whether or not it had really been "that" bad. While reading the book with my first sponsor, the Doctor's Opinion was describing chronic alcoholics as having an allergy and then said, "...the phenomenon of craving is limited to this class and never occurs in the average temperate drinker." Never. No wiggle room in that term.
Having already admitted to her and to myself that I had experienced that craving, those words popped the balloon of denial my brain was trying to hold onto. I became an alcoholic that day.
In time, I came to believe that my first sponsor drank like I drank. Through working the 12 steps, she had found freedom and the problem had been solved. It took me some time to really trust her. Once I did, she was able to guide me through those same steps to find my own freedom.
What a give we are given in AA!
